Re: 1988 Bayliner 38 Double Cabin Motor Yacht Model 3810 "ON MY OWN"
Dear Mr. MacLaughlin, This letter reports the results of a survey of the above vessel which was inspected while hauled on the 22nd of August 2005, at the Pleasure Marina in Warwick, Rhode Island. You requested the inspection to establish it’s conditionand value.
The survey guidelines are provided, for the most part, by the "N.F.P.A., and A.B.Y.C., Coast Guard Stan- dards, and the “Code of Federal Regulations”, as published for pleasure yachts, and the values guideline is the current edition of the “BUC” book along with current market conditions. The survey of this vessel is based solely on a careful visual inspec- tion of all accessible portions of it’s hull and equipment. Certain parts of the hull and structure can be inspected only by removing decking, liners, bulkheads and sheathing. These areas were not inspected. It is my normal prac- tice to conduct a survey which includes a sea trial and haul out for bottom inspection. The sea trial enables me to make a deter- mination concerning the engines and reduction gears. In order to make a proper inspection of these important components, they must be brought up to operating temperature and run under a load at RPM for a period of time. Inspection and operation of the engines was not limited to a visual inspection. The vessel was built by Bayliner Marine Corporation of Pipestone, Minnesota, in 1988. Moulded into the hull at the transom is the hull ID number (BL2A52ELK788). Pertinent dimensions of the vessel are: the LOA is 38' 2", and the beam is 13' 5", the draft is approximately 3' 2" and the displacement, according to the book, is 17,500 pounds. The hull below the waterline is solid fiberglass. A closed cell PVC foam and balsa core is used in the topsides and superstructure. The pilot house and boat deck are constructed of solid fiberglass with an end grain balsa core. The structural integrity of the hull is good. The bulkheads and interior tabbing are in good condition and secure. During the haul out the hull was checked for excess moisture and found to be within standard limits. The bottom was sounded and no soft spots were noted. All bulkheads are marine grade plywood. All stringers and frames are mahogany. The hull is rigid. The gelcoat finish, for the most part, is in good condition, overall, with only a few mars and scratches. There is one abra- sion on the keel which should be repaired. The hull-deck attachment is secure and trimmed with a stainless steel rub rail. I was unable to locate any structural delamination or separating of glass, including the engine bearers and stringers. The bulkheads are properly tabbed and rigid. The interior surface of the hull, as can be observed at the bilge area, is epoxy coated and in good condition. The bottom (sections below the water line) was inspected and found to be in good condition. The anti fouling coating has been applied (not a large buildup) and there is no blistering noted. All through hulls below the boot are silicone bronze and in good condition, and their re- lated valves are working properly. There are adequate large chrome plated bronze cleats provided for docking. The cleats are secure and properly backed. The bridge unit is prop- erly secured to the structure. The tinted bridge splash shield is in good shape. There is a stainless steel rail installed at the bridge, and it is secure. There is a good quality stainless steel bow pulpit properly installed, in good condition, backed, and secure. The stainless and teak ladder to the bridge is in good con- dition and secure. The fiberglass radar arch is in good shape and secure. The forward deck walk areas are solid and no soft spots were noted. All zincs and the ground plate are OK for now, but should be serviced each year. The crack you noticed around the transom cockpit entry is not structural and is typical for this vessel. A couple of soft spots were noted in the plywood around the cockpit trim, again, not structural. The navigation lights conform to the CFR. .
Page 2 of 6 1988 Bayliner 38 Double Cabin Motor Yacht Model 3810 "ON MY OWN" Bridge Station The bridge station is in overall good condition and clean. The controls are easy to operate. The white vi- nyl upholstery is in good condition. The bridge com- pass is accurate. All surfaces were checked out and no problems were found. The deck, (aft of the con- trol station) had a few gel coat scratches and dings, about the usual amount for a vessel of this age. The Biminy and related enclosure is probably original. The Biminy and supports are in good condition. Cockpit The cockpit area is clean and sturdy, The deck is well supported and the deck hatches are in good shape. The vinyl bolstering and teak trim are in good condi- tion. The ladder to the bridge is properly installed and secure. Lower Station The lower operating station console and controls is in good condition and operational. The operating station is well designed and the controls easy to operate. The compass is accurate. The throttle operates smoothly. The shifts and steering are also smooth operating. The hydraulic steering system could use the routine bleed- ing of air. The control panel including gauges is, for the most part, operating properly. This station houses the combination electrical control panel. On Thursday while blocked all low voltage systems and circuits that could be checked were checked out and found to be opera- tional. Salon The main cabin houses the salon at the first level. This area is large, nicely finished in Vinyl, Nylon, mahogany veneer, and carpeted, and in good condition. No fresh water leaks were noted. No rot was detected at any location inside the vessel. The entire inside area was checked for excess moisture content in all partitions, the overhead, and all glass surfaces. All checked out fine. Page 3 of 6 1988 Bayliner 38 Double Cabin Motor Yacht Model 3810 "ON MY OWN" Forward deck and Bow area, Continued There is an adequately sized anchor with ap- propriate rode properly mounted on the bow sprite. The rode is more than adequate and in good condition. There is a good size anchor and rode storage at the bow. The stainless railing at the bow pulpit and stanchions are in good condition. The bow cleats are in good condition and secure. Propulsion and Machinery Propulsion is by a pair of counter rotating six cylinder fresh water cooled 175 HP Hino Diesel engines with reduction gears, coupled to monel shaft and on to bronze propellers. The shafts, logs, bearings and propellers are in good condition. The engines and gears are in good condition, clean, and appear well maintained. Ventilation to the engine spaces is adequate. The exhaust system is cast and rubber, with fiberglass si- lencers, heavy duty, and in good condition as can be inspected. The system clamps are not all doubled and a few should be replaced. All below water through hull fittings including the valves are silicone bronze and in good working condition. The controls and cables are smooth operating, both from the upper and lower stations. No fuel leaks were noted. The engine compartment is epoxy painted, sound and sturdy, and free from clutter. The bilge in this area is in good shape. There are adequate bilge pumps installed and working in this area. There is no oil in the bilge. The hydraulic steering gear is in good condition and operates smoothly from both stations. The trim tabs were checked out and are work- ing properly. The Diesel generator was not started but looks good. Piping and Tanks Both fuel tanks are pretty well secured and can not be examined. The water heater appeare to be a recent upgrade. The fuel lines are approved flex to hard line. The fuel fills and vents are in good order. The systems are properly bonded. A complete ground system is installed. The septic sys- tem was not checked out. Some minor leaks were noted and repairs should be considered. Page 4 of 6 1988 Bayliner 38 Double Cabin Motor Yacht Model 3810 "ON MY OWN" placed. (Low voltage) The batteries are properly connected to the ap- proved three way switches and then on to custom breaker panels. The wiring and terminals that could be observed are in good condition. The batteries are properly boxed and covered. The shore power system is in good condition as are the cables and ter- minals. The shore power cables adapters are in good secure condition. There are two shore power cable adapters, one for 120 volts AC and a second for 120 volts AC air conditioning only. Both lines share the same breaker panel. The combination heat / air conditioner systems were inot checked out. There is a 60 Amp charger mounted in the locker of the center cabin. The navigation equipment and electronics, including the radar, was checked out. The anchor windlass was not operated. The electronics is not original, some has been updated. The overall condition of the electrical system is good. Berthing A large berth is located beneath the aft part of the main salon. This area is clean, nicely finished and uphol- stered. There is adequate lighting and ventilation in this area. The deck in this area is properly supported, nicely finished and in overall good condition. I was unable to locate any excess moisture on any surface in this mid cabin. The forward berth area is also clean and in good condi- tion. No fresh water leaks were noted in any berth area. Head liners in both areas were clean and in good condition and secure. Heads and Bath This vessel is equipped with one and one half baths. Both areas appear in good clean condition. All surfaces were checked for rot and fresh water leaks, and none was noted. There are a few minor plumbing leaks that should be repaired and many clamps should be replaced. The actual macerators and pumps were not checked. Page 5 of 6 1988 Bayliner 38 Double Cabin Motor Yacht Model 3810 "ON MY OWN" Electrical and Electronics The batteries are probably orig- inal, and one may need to be re- Galley The stove and refrigerator system appear in good condition. The stainless sink and hardware are in good condition. The teak and holly deck in this area is properly supported and in very good condition. The galley, overall, is in good condition. Conclusion This survey can not be construed to guar- antee or warrant the condition or opera- tional condition of this vessel. "ON MY OWN" is in very good con- dition overall. It is obvious that reasonably good care and maintenance has been the rule and not the exception. I feel "ON MY OWN" will be a safe insurance risk for Coastwise cruising during the normal yachting season, with due regard for weather conditions and a complete Coast Guard Safety and Signal- ling package is aboard. It’s present value would be approximately $80,000.00 to $85,000.00, with the items mentioned repaired, in today’s market. Recommendations: Service septic system, repair ding in skeg, add backup ground tackle.Double clamp all through hull hose fittings.
